Interior Painting Prep Guide
Everything you need to do before your interior painting project. Proper preparation leads to better results, faster timelines, and a smoother experience.
1. Clear the Room
- Move small furniture, lamps, and decor out of the room completely.
- Large furniture (sofas, beds) should be moved to the center and covered with drop cloths.
- Remove wall art, mirrors, curtain rods, and switch plate covers.
- Clear shelves and countertops near walls being painted.
2. Protect Your Floors
- Professional painters will lay drop cloths, but removing area rugs beforehand helps.
- If you have hardwood or tile, ensure nothing is left on the floor near walls.
- For carpet, painters will use canvas drop cloths to prevent paint drips.
3. Address Wall Damage First
- Point out any holes, cracks, or water stains to your painter before they start.
- Small nail holes can be patched as part of the painting process.
- Larger drywall damage should be repaired before painting for the best result.
- If you see mold or moisture, address the source before painting over it.
4. Choose Your Colors
- Have your color selections finalized before the crew arrives.
- If you're unsure, ask your painter for recommendations based on your lighting and style.
- Test paint samples on the wall first — colors look different in your specific lighting.
- Consider the sheen: flat for ceilings, eggshell for walls, semi-gloss for trim and doors.
5. Plan for Ventilation
- Even with low-VOC paint, good airflow helps paint dry faster and reduces odor.
- Plan to open windows or run fans after painting is complete.
- If you have pets or children, consider keeping them out of freshly painted rooms for 24 hours.
6. What to Expect During Painting
- Professional painters will mask trim, windows, and fixtures before starting.
- Expect some noise and activity — but a good crew keeps the workspace clean.
- Most rooms take about a day. Your painter will give you a specific timeline.
- A final walkthrough ensures everything meets your expectations before the crew leaves.
